A Review of the Jopen Key Charms Lace Vibe: Or, the one with sexy little nubs
UPDATE: this toy is discontinued. I highly recommend you check out the fantastic FemmeFunn Ultra Bullet instead!
Physical Details
The Jopen Key Charms Lace is quite pretty. I don’t like the shade of hot pink, but this vibe manages to catch my eye all the same. It’s unique and I have a penchant for unique things. This is the first clitoral vibe I own that is so distinctly textured with nubs. I really love the look of the spherical nubs and fish-net stripes that run up and down the vibe. Though this is strictly a clitoral vibe, Jopen also makes a larger, insertable version called the Key Ceres Lace.
This vibe comes packaged quite well. I really liked the packaging with the Jopen Comet II, and I’m happy that Jopen has kept the same style for this little vibe. Inside the box, you’ll find a couple of information booklets, a fabric drawstring case, and your vibe.
The Jopen Key Charms Lace isn’t rechargeable, unfortunately. I’m so used to rechargeable vibes now that using a battery-operated vibe feels like I’m undergoing some ancient cultural practice. It could be worse though. At least the Charms Lace doesn’t take watch batteries. Compared to watch batteries, one AA battery isn’t half-bad, but it isn’t included so be sure to have one ready.
The vibe’s pink sleeve is made from a lovely silicone. It’s silky and smooth, just like the silicone on the Jopen Comet II. This type of silicone finish isn’t sticky, so it won’t catch lint and dust as easily as other types of silicone finishes. Underneath the pink sleeve is an ABS plastic bullet with PU coating. I always keep the sleeve on. You don’t need to remove the sleeve to change the batteries.
One thing that surprised me is that the Jopen Key Charms Lace is waterproof! In all honesty, I wasn’t expecting that. Sometimes even high-end rechargeable toys aren’t waterproof (ie, only splashproof), so I found this to be a huge perk. It’s so much easier to clean a toy that can be submerged in water, and this toy’s nubs and lines can gather a fair bit of gunk. Be sure to wash with warm water and soap before and after each use and make sure that the battery lid is screwed on tightly when you do so.
I’m less impressed with the vibrations. There are plenty of varying patterns but only one steady-state. The vibrations have mid-level strength. I’d rate the vibration strength at 5/10, so this vibe is certainly no We-Vibe Tango. They’re also mostly buzzy, but not too terribly surface-level. Also, while I’m happy that the vibrations are concentrated at the tip, they carry down the whole body. The result? Your hand will get numb, especially if you prefer the steady-state vibration speed.
Noise wise, the Jopen Key Charms Lace vibe is neither astonishingly quiet nor horribly loud. You’ll hear it if you’re in the same bedroom, but the sound is muffled sufficiently when it’s under the blankets. It definitely won’t carry through walls or a closed door though, so this is great if you need to keep things quiet for roommates. The sound itself isn’t as high and annoyingly buzzy as I’d expect, but it’s not particularly deep and rumbly. One annoying quirk I’ve noticed is that, if you hold the vibe by only the silver alloy battery cover, the sound will suddenly switch to a high and whiny frequency. I don’t know why this happens, but it isn’t much of a problem because I hold on to the pink silicone part during use.
My Experience with the Jopen Key Charms Lace
If you’re a texture-junky, chances are you’ll like feeling these nubs. I’m not usually interested in texture, but this vibe changed that for me. When using it, I find the texture weirdly arousing. I keep myself shaved/trimmed, which means that my outer lips are quite sensitive to the touch. When it comes to this vibe, feeling the silky silicone nubs on my lips get me quite hot and bothered. This is new for me because I’ve never given a second thought to texture on clitoral vibes. Now I’m realizing that the majority of my textured toys have sticky silicone, which just catches on my skin. So, thanks to the Jopen Key Charms Lace, I now know I like silky-textured fun time.
This vibe can definitely get me interested in orgasms. But it can’t actually take me there. I do love that it can give me pinpoint stimulation, and the vibrations certainly feel nice, but the vibrations just aren’t strong enough to appease my power-hungry clitoris.
When it comes to power, I’m greedy, and oftentimes I’m not happy with anything short of the strength that the Tango can give me. Then again, at ~$40, this doesn’t cost nearly as much as a Tango. At half the Tango’s price, I can understand that it’ll only give me half the vibrations. But I don’t think I’ll be choosing this over the Tango unless I’m in the mood for getting myself all worked up over that lovely textured feeling.
Overall
If you already have something expensive and strong, like the Tango, you probably don’t need the Jopen Key Charms Lace vibe. But if you don’t already have an arsenal of vibes in the $80-$200 range, this could still be a good inexpensive alternative, especially if you think you’ll love the textured nubs. It’s silky, it’s waterproof, and it’s discreet.
